Small Changes – Big Improvements

The need for a new, bigger, or more functional bathroom are common catalysts that spark many home bathroom remodels.

On this project, the homeowners wanted to enlarge and update the hall bathroom that their daughters share. They realized that as the girls were getting older they needed more room, and that the bathroom could use an update in general. We are going to explore how a few small changes with the layout and customization through selections & finishes can all add up to a big improvement in the appeal & functionality of a space.

New Layout

The layout of the bathroom was changed with the help of a designer to allow for more usable space. First, the bathroom door was bumped out a few feet further into the hallway. In the process of moving the doorway, the closet inside the bathroom was removed to make room for a new double vanity & larger medicine cabinet selected by the owners. The double vanity has its own nook, and this opened up the previously tight surrounding bathroom area. The closet in the hallway was reduced in size as a concession to create the larger space in the bathroom but remains a decent sized linen closet. To make up for the loss in storage the double vanity comes with plenty of storage as does the large in-the-wall mirrored medicine cabinet.

The power of selections to customize & maximize space

There aren’t too many choices when it comes to tile patterns, but it’s important to pick one that is right for you and your space. We guided the owners in the tile pattern selection process. The tile pattern selected for the new shower wall is hexagonal tiles positioned on their point, giving the shower a more vertical feel. This coupled with the owners decision to go for a modern look and tile to the ceiling makes the shower feel larger as it draws the eye upward to make the ceiling seem higher.

Similarly, the tile pattern for the bathroom floor was selected to give a visual effect of length. The owners liked the idea of large format tiles running longways from the entry way with a 1/3 offset brick pattern to give this effect.

A niche inside the shower was added as well. The owners selected both the niche size and location of the shelf within the niche to meet their needs. Opting for the shelf at the bottom of the niche was part of the customization to make the new space work best for them, and something to consider when you are tackling a new project idea.

Lighting in the bathroom can create a brighter and more inviting feeling. We suggested installing a light in the shower to provide additional light in that space and the main light fixture above the double vanity was expanded to better fit the space and provide additional light. And there is even a light on the new bath fan. All of this added light helps to brighten up the entire space.

The small changes do make a big difference!

Adding additional square footage and customization through selections & finishes worked! The new bathroom is updated with a more modern look and feels much larger than the original. The larger mirrored medicine cabinet & double vanity not only fit perfectly in the new space, but also provide ample storage. The tile pattern selections contribute to the new space feeling fresh as well as new and larger as well, and the changes to lighting contribute to a brighter bathroom.

After the initial big decision to begin a remodeling project, it’s easy to see how only a few choices can impact the success of your project and the overall improvement of your home’s new space.
