Your Modern Sanctuary – A Primary Suite
With the state of the real estate market the past few years, some people who are in search of more of their own space are choosing not to move, but instead to add square footage and amenities to their current homes with a primary suite addition. It’s a budding trend allowing people to stay in their same homes & communities while giving them needed room, comfort and privacy.
Here are two (2) projects that we have built in the last two years (one in 2023 and the other in 2024).
The goal of the clients on both projects was to expand and improve their homes by increasing square footage with a primary suite addition that gave them more of their own space, added privacy as well as incorporated some hotel worthy amenities with the ensuite bathrooms and walk in closets.
These projects have several similarities that I wanted to point out and the end results speak for themselves, two modern sanctuaries! Both have ensuite spa-like bathrooms with custom vanities, custom showers and modern tubs. The walk-in closets and in bedroom fireplaces add an element of luxury and comfort to both. Both clients used designers to help guide their visions to these fantastic end results.
Planning is a vital reason that these projects were successful and have the finished look that they do. These are large projects with many moving parts that require a true team effort.
With plans & drawings provided by architects & designers, our team was able to build the additions to the specifications the clients desired. And to cap it all off, each designer nailed the finishing touches that really set these additions apart. Spaces don’t look like this by accident. Generally, the more planning and thought put into a project at the beginning, the better the execution by trades people and the overall outcome.
Both additions were built on top of the existing structure of the houses, Project 2024 - a garage, and Project 2023 on top of a previous 1st floor addition. As a result, the owners were able to save a little on both the building costs and time under construction as there was no need to build a foundation, which is common when building an addition. Both were outfitted with new roofs and either new or matching siding to the existing, allowing these additions to blend in seamlessly with the original parts of the house.
Likewise, hardwood floors in both additions continued the aesthetic of the existing floors in each house, nicely integrating the old with the new.
What’s old is new! With the increased footprint of each house, previous living spaces were able to be transformed into new spaces for different uses. In the 2024 Project, a bedroom became a walk-in closet, and what once was an office added to the size of the new bedroom. In the 2023 Project, they converted a bedroom into a large home office.
And saving the best similarity for last - let’s go to the spa! – as you will see from the photos - these bathrooms are truly gorgeous! Each one could be their own separate blog post and yet they were just one part of these projects. There are just so many details and choices that went into these perfect bathroom finishes. Beautiful marble tile and classic fixtures. Exquisite lighting. Custom shower & shower glass, custom vanities, custom vanity tops & backsplash and soaking tubs (one freestanding, one alcove). The photos speak for themselves, evoking a tranquil and relaxing spa experience all in your own home.
Individual touches – As similar as these projects were, different groups of people helped to plan and create them. The different design details and finishes give each their own unique look and feel, perfect for each client.

The beadboard and cathedral ceiling - this design element adds height to the ceiling making the room feel larger, and the beadboard accent adds a nice texture and depth to the new primary bedroom – something that was carried over and used in the bathroom as well. Other personal design touches that add a level of softness throughout the space are arches on doorways and an arched window around the tub in the ensuite bathroom. An additional element that was hand selected was an octagonal window & trim for a second bathroom window.

A balcony addition added a nice touch to the primary bedroom, connecting the space with the outdoors while simultaneously bringing in more light into the bedroom with the sliding doors. Other design touches like an art light, a built-in bookshelf and wallpaper on an accent wall in the bedroom created a space that was a personal retreat for the clients. And the custom walk-in closets now provide abundant storage space and organization that was not previously available.
Each project was no small feat and took an extraordinary amount of coordination amongst the architects, designers & craftsmen, and our building team. But the results provided our clients with spaces that they can truly enjoy, relax in and best of all remain in the community that they feel connected with.
